The SDG Academy brings together leading experts on sustainable development to equip the next generation of “Sustainable Development Practitioners” who can effectively tackle the complex challenges facing our world. The discoveries and experiences of seasoned experts in education, health, agriculture, food systems, climate change, sustainable investment and related fields are gleaned to develop comprehensive and empowering curricula.
The academy’s mission is to provide free, high-quality, graduate-level courses on sustainable development to students, professionals, and institutions. This massive open online education platform is fully interactive. Meaning that one can meet, debate and learn from fellow students and the global faculty of sustainable development experts. Though courses are available free of charge, individuals and institutions are provided with several paid options for accessing course material. Courses on offer include topics on natural resource governance, sustainable cities, climate change, planetary boundaries, global public health, human rights, among others.
The academy is an initiative hosted by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). An independent, non-profit association of academic and research institutions launched in August 2012. Pioneered under the auspices of former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, SDSN’s purpose is to “fast-track” practical problem solving for sustainable development and to support the framing of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDG Academy functions independently of programs and courses offered by the SDSN’s member institutions. Membership to the collaborative SDSN is free and open to universities, research institutions, foundations, civil society and other organisations with a commitment to and expertise in areas related to sustainable development.
